There are seasons when everything just feels… off.
Not completely falling apart. Not a full-blown crisis. Just enough chaos to leave you feeling behind, overwhelmed, and slightly annoyed with yourself all day long.
That was me.
I wasn’t failing at life…I just wasn’t showing up the way I knew I could. My routine was inconsistent. My goals felt far away. And I kept telling myself, “I’ll start fresh tomorrow morning.”
Spoiler alert: I did not.
Tomorrow kept moving. So instead of trying to overhaul my entire life (again), I decided to do something different. I gave myself five simple questions.
No complicated system. No perfect planner. No color-coded routine.
Just five questions that force me to be honest with myself and, more importantly, take action.
And honestly? They’ve helped me more than any app, planner, or productivity hack ever has.
1. What Am I Avoiding Right Now?
Let’s just call it what it is.
Most of the time, the thing making everything feel heavy is the very thing we’re avoiding.
For me, it usually looks like:
- Ignoring the budget.
- Skipping workouts because I “don’t have time.”
- Putting off a small task until it becomes a much bigger problem.
The longer I avoid it, the more mental space it takes up.
The funny thing is, the moment I ask myself this question, I already know the answer.
And once I name it, it loses a little of its power.
2. What Would the Version of Me I’m Trying to Become Do Today?
Not the perfect version.
Not the unrealistic, never-misses-a-day, color-coded-planner version.
Just the aligned version.
The woman who:
- Hits her protein goal (or at least tries).
- Moves her body, even if it’s only a short walk.
- Follows through more often than she doesn’t.
This question shifts my thinking from:
“I don’t feel like it.”
to
“I know what I should do next.”
That version of me doesn’t spend all day overthinking.
She starts.
3. What Actually Matters Today?
This one is huge, especially if you’re juggling a household, kids, schedules, responsibilities, and approximately 72 tabs open in your brain at all times.
Everything feels important.
Everything feels urgent.
But the truth is, not everything is.
Some things are important.
Some things are simply loud.
This question helps me filter through the noise and focus on what actually moves my life forward instead of what merely keeps me busy.
4. If I Did the Bare Minimum Well Today, What Would That Be?
This question changed everything for me.
For years, I thought if I couldn’t do everything, I might as well do nothing.
Now?
My bare minimum is a win.
Most days, it looks like:
- Getting some form of movement.
- Hitting my protein goal (or getting close).
- Staying within my calorie target.
- Being present with my husband and kids.
That’s it.
Not perfect.
Not aesthetically.
Not Instagram worthy.
Just effective.
5. What’s One Small Thing I Can Do Right Now?
Not later.
Not after I feel motivated.
Not when I have more time.
Right now.
Because progress rarely comes from dramatic life overhauls.
It comes from small decisions made consistently.
Sometimes that looks like:
- Prepping one meal.
- Taking a 10-minute walk.
- Writing down a simple plan for tomorrow.
It doesn’t need to be impressive.
It just needs to happen.
The Real Goal Isn’t Perfection. It’s Direction
These questions didn’t magically fix everything overnight.
What they did was give me a way to:
- Reset without spiraling.
- Stay consistent without overwhelming myself.
- Keep moving forward, even on messy days.
Because let’s be honest life isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
But we can get better at showing up in the middle of it.
So if you’re feeling stuck, start here.
You don’t need a brand-new routine.
You don’t need a complete life reset.
You don’t need to wait until Monday.
Just pause and ask yourself:
- What am I avoiding?
- What would the version of me I’m becoming do?
- What actually matters today?
- What’s my bare minimum?
- What’s one small step I can take right now?
That’s it.
Just start there.
